The Small Space Workout: Train Anywhere with TRX

The Small Space Workout: Train Anywhere with TRX

Big results don't require a big gym.

Whether you're training at home, in an apartment, in a spare room or making the most of a compact workout area, limited space doesn't have to limit your training.

With the right equipment and a little planning, you can build strength, improve fitness and create an effective full-body workout without bulky machines or a dedicated gym room.

Adapted from TRX's The Small Space Workout for Training in Any Room, this guide explores how TRX Suspension Training can help you make more of the space you have.

Make the Most of Your Space

When it comes to small-space training, consistency matters more than square metres. The key is choosing exercises that keep you moving efficiently, require minimal equipment and can be adapted to your fitness level.

A clear training area, controlled movements and a versatile piece of equipment can be all you need to get started.

What You'll Need

You don't need an extensive equipment collection to train effectively. Start with the basics:

  • A mat: Provides comfort and grip for floor-based exercises.

  • A TRX Suspension Trainer: Uses your body weight and adjustable positioning to deliver a versatile full-body workout.

  • Optional resistance equipment: Tools such as YBell can add resistance without taking up the space required for larger weights or machines.

The TRX Suspension Trainer is particularly well suited to compact training areas, offering a wide range of exercise options with minimal equipment. Always ensure your anchor point is suitable, secure and installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

5 TRX Exercises for Small Spaces

One of the biggest advantages of TRX Suspension Training is its versatility. By adjusting your body position, you can change the intensity of an exercise without needing additional weights.

1. TRX Squat

Hold the handles for support as you lower your hips, keeping your chest lifted and knees aligned with your toes. Drive through your feet to return to standing.

Why it works: Builds lower-body strength while allowing you to adjust your range of motion and level of support.

2. TRX Single-Leg Squat

Use the straps for balance as you perform a controlled squat on one leg. Start with a shallow range of motion and progress as your strength and stability improve.

Why it works: Challenges single-leg strength, balance and coordination without requiring extra floor space.

3. TRX Chest Press

Face away from your anchor point, hold the handles and lean forward with your body in a straight line. Bend your elbows to lower your chest, then press back to the starting position.

Why it works: Targets the chest, shoulders and triceps, with difficulty adjusted by changing your foot position.

4. TRX Row

Face the anchor point with your arms extended and lean back while maintaining a straight body position. Pull your chest towards your hands, keeping your shoulders controlled, then slowly extend your arms.

Why it works: Strengthens the upper back and biceps while helping balance out pushing exercises.

5. TRX Plank

Place your feet in the foot cradles and position yourself in a plank, keeping your body aligned and core engaged. Start with short holds and build up as your control improves.

Why it works: Challenges core stability without requiring a large training area.

Try This Small-Space Workout

Short on time? Combine a few movements into a simple circuit that can be completed in a compact space.

Complete the following exercises in order, resting as needed between movements.

  • TRX Squat: 10–12 repetitions

  • TRX Chest Press: 8–12 repetitions

  • TRX Row: 8–12 repetitions

  • TRX Plank: 20–30 seconds

Aim for two to three rounds, adjusting repetitions and rest periods to suit your fitness level.

Focus on controlled technique rather than rushing through the exercises. Before starting, make sure you have enough clearance to move safely and that your suspension trainer is correctly secured.

How to Keep Progressing

You don't need more space or a growing collection of equipment to make progress. With TRX, you can increase the challenge by adjusting your body angle, slowing down each repetition, adding repetitions or incorporating more demanding exercise variations.

Track your workouts and gradually build intensity as your strength and technique improve.

The goal is to create a routine that fits your lifestyle and is realistic enough to maintain.
